A Manhattan state Supreme Court judge has ordered the NYPD to release thousands of pages of internal officer misconduct records, following a lawsuit filed by THE CITY. In the June 7 order, Justice Lyle E. Frank directed the NYPD to begin providing the documents requested by reporter Yoav Gonen within 10 days, with a minimum of 1,000 pages a month.
Represented by Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and Davis Wright Tremaine, reporter Yoav Gonen had requested the police misconduct records in August 2022, after New York repealed a state law that shielded uniformed officers’ personnel records from the public. The police department denied the request.
